Friends of Blue Mounds State Park will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the lower level of the Luverne Chamber Office for membership interest and community input on how to  enhance the park.  
Rock County VFW Post 2757 will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Rock County Military Museum.
Vienna Township Board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Kenneth Community Center.
American Legion and Auxiliary will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the post home.

Weekend events at Blue Mounds State Park
Prowling the Prairie — Join the park naturalist at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, for a 2-mile hike across the prairie to look for tracks, trails and other signs of wildlife. Meet at the visitors center parking lot. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water.
Build a Bison: From Hooves to Horns — Help a naturalist "build" a bison by transforming an audience member through dress-up. Meet at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in the amphitheater and bring a camp chair or blanket, as seating is limited.
 
Library book sale runs Sept. 21-23
The Friends of the Library will host their annual book sale open to the public from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thurday, Sept. 21; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22; and for the bag day special from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23.
A pre-sale from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, is for Friends of the Library only.
 
Donate books for Friends of Library sale
The Friends of the Library are now collecting books until Sept. 16 for the upcoming book sale Sept. 20-23 at the Rock County Library. Accepted items include audio tapes, records, CDs, hardcover and paperback books. Items not accepted are encyclopedias and textbooks. 
 
The Oaks celebrates
20th anniversary
The Good Samaritan Society will celebrate 
the 20th Anniversary of The Oaks Senior Living facility in Luverne with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Cupcakes and coffee will be served.
 
Kids Fishing Derby Sept. 17
Luverne Optimist Club will sponsor its annual Kids Fishing Derby from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Veterans Home pond in Luverne. Bring poles and tackle; complimentary hot dogs and beverages are provided along with prizes and drawings for kids. Poles can be reserved ahead by calling Stan, 507-227-0681, or Travis, 507-220-5191. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
 
Blue Mound Lutheran Fall Festival Sept. 17
The Blue Mound Lutheran Church Fall Festival will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Blue Mound Lutheran Church in rural Luverne. The event will mark the 145th anniversary of the founding of the church. The Rev. Mike Zaske, former pastor of Kenneth and Adrian’s Zion Lutheran, will be the guest pastor. A catered dinner follows the worship service. All are welcome.
 
Food ministry Sept. 21
New Life Celebration Church monthly food ministry will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the Luverne Senior Center for those having trouble putting food on the table. Please bring a box or bags for food. Children are asked to wait outside. Call 283-4366.
 
Leaders Partnering to End Poverty Kick-off Sept. 21
Leaders Partnering to End Poverty (LPEP) will host their kick-off event of a year-long leadership program from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Grand Prairie Events, 105 South Estey Street, Luverne.
The workshop will be led by nationally known speaker Jodi Pfarr. A free lunch and free child care are available but preregistration is required. Contact ATLAS of Rock County at 507-449-5777, and check Luv1LuvAll facebook page.
 
Cub Scouts sign-up meeting Sept. 21
Sioux Council BSA invites interested boys in grades K-5 and their parents to a School Night for Scouting from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.
Cost to join Cub Scouts is $43 per boy, which covers registration and insurance through January 2019. No one will be turned away because of cost.
Those who sign up will receive a “Hero Scouts” Frisbee.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Luverne from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday Sept. 25, in Grace Lutheran Church.
 
Caregivers Support Group meets Sept. 26
The Caregivers Support Group will meet at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Society in the conference room from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26. Anyone deaing with caregiving or with questions regarding resources is encouraged to attend.
 
Walking Military Memorial downtown
More than 40 Luverne businesses are participating in a Walking Military Memorial on Main Street. The displays, presented by Remember Rally, include photos, banners, information and uniforms, as a way to thank all our military. The displays will remain until fall.

Additional actors, actresses sought for GEP production
Adult actors and actresses are needed to complete the cast for the Green Earth Players production of “Miracle on 34th Street.”
Try-outs were conducted and director Bruce Kurtz is in search of adult actors (ages 40-70) to fill open male and female roles of including that of Dr. Pierce, Macy, Bloomingdale and Judge Harper.

Rehearsals are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the GEP building, 401 E. Edgehill St., Luverne.

Community Ed and Rock County Library invite children birth to 5 years and parent/grandparent to register for Story Walk the evening of Sept. 28.  There will be hands-on activities. Registration required for this free activity.   
Kids in the Kitchen (grades K-6) will cook up apple treats at Apples Galore! Sept. 28.  Fee is $18 or sign up with a friend and pay $28.
Students age Kindergarten and older will get to experience a cross country race firsthand plus meet the LHS cross country team at Runnin’ for Fun Sept. 29. Fee is $5.
Defensive Driving The next full eight-hour class is Nov. 6 and 13.
