County Highway 3 closed south of Kenneth
County Highway 3 will be closed 2 ½ miles south of Kenneth for bridge replacement for roughly two weeks. Call the Rock County Highway Department, 507-283-5010, with questions.
 
Fall Story Hour and Laptime begin at library
Fall Story Hour is open to pre-school children ages 4-5 at the Rock County Library from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays through Nov. 17. Register by calling 449-5040.
Laptime for ages birth-3 with an adult is from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Fridays through Nov. 18. No registration is required.
 
Red Arrow local fund drive underway
Rock County Red Arrow 2016 fund drive continues until Oct. 14 with the theme, “Standing Strong in Service to Rock County.” The organization raises funds for 29 local organizations. Call Dianne Ossenfort, 283-9050, with information about how to give.
 
Operation Christmas Child boxes available
Operation Christmas Child boxes have arrived in Luverne. Anyone wishing to send gifts to underprivileged children can pick one up at American Reformed Church south entrance where there will be more information about how to support a child for Christmas. Collection week is Nov. 14-21. Donors are encouraged to pay shipping online and track their boxes to a specific country. Go to samaritanpurse.org. Domestic Violence Awareness Night Oct. 13
Show your support by attending Domestic Violence Awareness Night from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Luverne Farmers Market. There will be dance performances starting at 6 p.m. by young women from Spotlight Dance and Performing Arts Academy. Stop by the Southwest Crisis Center table for information.

Ten Pigs Traveling Trunk Show Oct. 14
Join Derek Anderson, author-illustrator of “Ten Pigs: An Epic Bath Adventure,” for a one-of-a-kind show at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in the Rock County Library basement.
Anderson will talk about “The Greatest Job in the World,” get you dancing to original music by Minnesota composer Tom Lieberman, make you laugh with goofy props, and involve the audience in a group drawing activity.
The event is suitable for families with children ages 0-6 and lasts about 45 minutes.
 
Scarecrow Festival Oct. 15
The Veterans Home is planning its 10th annual Fall Festival. Organizations are encouraged to join in the fun and put up their own scarecrow creations. There is no specific theme this year.
The home also invites the public to join them Saturday, Oct. 15 (note change of date), from 10-11:15 a.m. for carnival games and great prizes. Scarecrow displays will be judged that day, so come and vote for your favorites.
 
A.C.E. offers Time Out for You! Oct. 19
A.C.E. of Southwest Minnesota will host a Medicare information event at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the Human Services Building. Topics covered include Medicare Supplement Insurance coverage, plan options, plan pricing and information about eligibility and more. Call 283-5064 with questions.
 
Fire Department movie ‘BFG’ at Palace
The Luverne Fire Department will show their annual benefit movie, “BFG,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 4 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, and at 4, 7, and 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.
 
Community Ed offers bus to Science Museum
Community Education is offering families the opportunity to take a trip to the Science Museum and the Mall of America Thursday, Oct. 20, during MEA break. The fee is $55 for the cost of the museum ticket and the bus ride. Call 507-283-4724 to reserve seats.
 
Monthly Food Ministry Oct. 20
The monthly Food Ministry, sponsored by New Life Celebration Church, will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Luverne Senior Center. If you’re having trouble putting food on the table, come for fresh produce, meat and bread. Children are asked to wait outside.
 
‘Live at the Carnegie’ Oct. 27
The first  “Live at the Carnegie” event, titled “Thrilling Thursday,” will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Luverne Street Music in the Carnegie Cultural Center. Performers will wear Halloween costumes as they play. The event will be in the upstairs Tocatta room. Everyone is welcome.
 
History Center open to public Oct. 30
The History Center in the former downtown Luverne Ford dealership will be open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, to tour the renovated building, meet Historical Society volunteers and enjoy Rock County history on display. Financial support is still being accepted with a dollar-for-dollar match from an anonymous donor through the end of the year.
The museum will be open from 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at the new location at 312 E. Main Street in Luverne.
 
Sixth annual Gospel Jubilee scheduled for Oct. 30
The American Reformed Church in Luverne is sponsoring the sixth annual Gospel Jubilee starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. The Benson Family Singers perform from 3-4 p.m. followed by The Masters Voice Quartet from 4-5 p.m., lunch at 5 p.m. and The Garms Family from 6-7 p.m. Lunch costs $5, and freewill offerings will be accepted during the musical performances.
