Meetings

Lady Luverne Red Hats will meet at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, in the parking lot east of St. Catherine’s Church in Luverne to carpool to Brandon for dinner at the Brandon Steakhouse and a play, “Bye, Bye, Birdie.” Call Donna at 283-8019 to pre-register.

Blue Mound Cemetery Association will host its annual picnic at 7 p.m. Monday, July 23, at the home of Randy and Kathy Remme.

Summer Bash at the Plaza July 19
Tonight (Thursday) from 5-7 p.m. will be a water-themed carnival, Splish Splash Summer Bash, at the parking lot of the History Center on East Main Street. The Rock County Historical Society will serve barbecues, chips, cookie and a beverage for $3.
 
Registration open for students new to Luverne district
New residents to Luverne School District #2184 should come to respective school offices and register students for the 2018-2019 school year.
The high school/middle school office is open for new students to register. To make an appointment to register for students in grades 6-12, call the middle school/high school office at 283-4491.
The elementary office will be open for new students to register starting Monday, Aug. 1. Parents of elementary students in grades K-5 can call 283-4497.
The new school year starts on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
 
Free food July 19
New Life Celebration Church will offer free food from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, in the Luverne Senior Citizens Building on East Lincoln Street in Luverne for those having trouble putting food on the table. Bring your own boxes and bags. Call 283-4366 with questions.
 
Urgent: Red Cross Blood Drive July 23
The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage and is issuing an urgent call for donors of all blood types to give blood.
Plan now to donate from 1-7 p.m. Monday, July 23, at the Red Cross Blood Drive at Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne.

Free meal at United Methodist July 25
The Luverne United Methodist Church will host a free community meal beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the church.
 
Dodge ‘Raminator’ coming to the fair
Papik Motors will bring the monster truck “Raminator” to the Rock County Fairgrounds in Luverne Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28, for family entertainment. The monster truck recorded a speed of 99.10 mph to become the Guinness World Record holder for fastest monster truck. The truck will be at the fair for people to climb aboard and take photographs.

seeks fall class instructors and ideas
Luverne Community Education invites the public to submit new class ideas for the fall or to contact them with a class that you would like to teach. The deadline for submission of ideas for the fall brochure is Wednesday, Aug. 1. Contact Karen Willers at k.willers@isd2184.net. The current Community Education brochure can be found online at www.isd2184.net under the Community Education link. Please note that the Community Education office is closed through July 27.

Art Camp to study cartoons, comics and pop art will be three sessions on July 17-19 at Coffey Contemporary Arts.  Fee for children who attended grades K-5 during the past year is $30.
Youth Firearms Trainers are needed here in the Luverne area.  If you are willing to become a trainer, please register for a July 30 class at the Minnesota DNR website.  If you wish to carpool, call Community Education by July 12 to arrange transportation. 
 
Rock County Library announces summer reading program
The Rock County Community Library is excited to launch its 2018 summer reading program, “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” The program is open to ages Pre-K through grade 12.
During June and July the library will host a variety of events for families to encourage and support a love of reading. Participants will win prizes for reaching their reading goals.
Registration starts Tuesday, May 29. For more information call the library at 507-449-5040.
 
Train to become a youth firearms teacher
The Minnesota DNR needs more youth firearms instructors to offer youth gun safety classes in Rock County. Training class to become a certified volunteer instructor to teach the field day for the online firearms safety course, as well as to teach in the classroom, is offered through the DNR. Pre-registration is required. Participants must be at least 18 years old and pass a background check. Register for this class at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/index.html. Little Lambs Preschool is now accepting registrations for the 2018-2019 school year. Registration materials may be picked up at the preschool or at St. John Lutheran Church office, at 803 N.
