Built on a Rock

My wife worked at a Christian School where both of our kids were students. At that time my son was in the fourth grade.
The band teacher approached my wife asking her why she didn’t tell her that our son could play the drums.
My wife responded by saying: “I didn’t know he could.”
The teacher proceeded to tell her, “Oh yes, he can play them, I just heard him.”
When she asked if anyone could play the drums, our son spoke up and said he could play. He noticed the drum kit stacked in the corner of the band room, proceeded to assemble it and played a worship song with the teacher.
Later, on the way home, my wife asked him when he learned to play the drums.
His reply was simple. “I just watched Dad.”
See, I had been playing on church worship teams for many years as well as practicing at home. And my son was watching every move I made paying close attention to where each piece would go. I had no idea he was watching me so close.
So, when the time came to do it on his own, he knew in his mind, he could reflect everything I did.
Our children watch us, our grandchildren watch us, and our students watch us. If you are a leader in the work force, your subordinates watch you. If you are the owner of a company, your employees watch you. All who watch reflect what we do.
Jesus said in Mark 9:41-42: “Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward. If anyone causes one of these little ones — those who believe in me — to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.”
When we read this verse, we may think Jesus is speaking of young children. However, he is speaking much broader. He is speaking of those who belong to him. He’s saying no service is too small, even a small gesture like offering a cup of water in His name, you will be rewarded. But it you take advantage of them, then you have serious problems.
As believers in Christ, each one of us must be an example of what it means to live a godly life, to reflect Jesus Christ in everything we do, not just what we may feel are important. Let’s remember people are watching us, even when we think no one is. Set a high example to those who reflect us, especially children.
We can either be someone’s role model or we can model their role. Which are you reflecting?
