Do you recall the television commercial, “Is it Chinet?” The word
“china” was a play on words to emphasize their strength and durability compared to a regular paper plate. The Chinet commercial claimed, “It takes five of these (ordinary) paper plates to stack up to the molded strength of one Chinet paper plate china.”
I don’t remember the first time using a heavy-duty paper plate. I do
remember the first time having a paper plate that was divided into three separate spots. To separate the food was wonderful, and the food
didn't soak through to your pants. That was very good!
This time of year we are thankful for many people, places and things.
This time of year is also a time to deal with grief of those who have
passed before us. Many events may trigger memories and emotions.
The three serving spots on a plate are a reminder of dealing with grief and sometimes despair. We may need more than one person to help in the variety of areas we need assistance. The paper plate is also a good reminder that we can only hold so much before the plate bends, spills, or soaks through. A paper plate is a guide for those willing to help in knowing they don’t have to help in all areas.
Sometimes a person is gifted to sit and listen. Another may be good and provide food or cleaning. A third person may be needed for another area.
In grief it is okay to say, “No.” We can only take on so much. As we celebrate the holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the New Year we can be reminded when we are using that paper plate of God’s gifts. First, the Trinity, the Father, who created us and sustains us. The
Son, Jesus, who died for our sins, and the cross shows his love and sacrifice. The Holy Spirit, who calls and enlightens us to God’s message, the Gospel, and provides the talents, resources that enable us to be there for one another.
Psalm 147.3 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” God not only physically provides healing. He provides spiritual care and comfort. Finally, “Bind up” releases or loosens the grief and permits us to find joy again.
May you find joy in Christ this season of hope.
I need more than one plate for all that is being offered!
