“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Proverbs 14:12 ESV)
Ole and Lars went hunting and were dragging the deer they got back to their pickup. Another hunter approached pulling his deer too.
“Hey, I don’t want to tell you guys how to do things, but it’s much easier if you drag the deer the other direction so the antlers don’t dig into the ground.”
After the hunter left, Ole and Lars decided to try it for themselves. A little while later Ole said to Lars, “You know, dat guy vas right. Dis is a lot easier!”
“Yah, sure, you betcha,” said Lars, “but ve are getting a lot farther avay from de truck.”
A key component of good communication is active listening. Too often in conversation we hear what we think the other person is saying instead of what is actually being said. Many conflicts in relationships, in business and even in world leadership, revolve around what someone thought someone else said.
When we listen for comprehension, we actually want to hear what the other person is saying. We give respect to the speaker and ask questions if we don’t understand.
Dear Lord, we want to communicate effectively with each other, but even more importantly we want to understand what You are saying to us. Give us ears to hear and hearts that seek after the truth. Thank You for showing us the way. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
