Let’s talk about candy corn. That tiny tri-colored triangle of sugar, wax, and mystery. Is it corn? Is it candy? Is it a candle that got lost in the Halloween aisle? No one really knows. But every October, it shows up like that one relative who insists on bringing their “famous” casserole to Thanksgiving. You didn’t ask for it, but there it is.
Candy corn tends to divide opinions. Some people love it, while others would rather eat a pine cone. But here’s the thing: candy corn is consistent. It always has the same shape, same color, same taste. It doesn’t try to be a candy bar. It doesn’t pretend to be a gummy worm. It just shows up, unapologetically waxy, weird, and bright.
And in a strange way, candy corn reminds me of God’s love.
Now, before you accuse me of a Biblical blooper, hear me out. Candy corn may not be everyone’s favorite, but it’s always there. It’s dependable. It doesn’t change with trends. It’s not trying to be cool. It’s just doing its thing, being candy corn. And if we think about it, that’s kind of like God’s love. It’s not flashy. It’s not trendy. But it’s always present, always available, and always faithful.
Paul writes in Romans 8:38-39 (NLT): “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow — not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below — indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Not death. Not life. Not angels. Not demons. Not even your questionable Halloween costume choices. God’s love is unshakable, unbreakable, and unlike candy corn, it’s actually good for you.
Here comes the chewy center of the message: just like candy corn, sometimes we overthink God’s love. We try to dissect it, categorize it, and argue about it. “Is it too sweet?” “Is it too sticky?” “Is it even real?” But God’s love isn’t meant to be dissected; it’s meant to be received.
You don’t have to understand every detail in the Bible to know that Jesus loves you. You just have to accept it. Like candy corn. You don’t have to love it. But you do have to admit, it’s always there.
So this fall, when you see that little orange triangle staring at you from the bottom of the candy bowl, and you will, let it remind you of something deeper: God’s love is consistent, present, and sometimes a little unexpected. And unlike candy corn, it’s not seasonal. It’s eternal.
