“Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.” (Psalms 22:11 ESV)
Lisabet sprang to the telephone when it rang and listened with relief to the kindly voice in her ear. “How are you, darling?” the woman said. “What kind of day are you having?”
Lisabet sobbed uncontrollably into the phone, “I haf had such a bad day. De babies vill not eat and de vashing machine broke down. I haf not been to de grocery store yet. I yust sprained my ankle and I haf to hobble around. De house is a mess and ve are hafing company for dinner tonight.”
“Oh, darling,” the mother said, “sit down, relax, and close your eyes. I’ll be there in half an hour. I can do your shopping on the way over and then get dinner in the oven to bake while I clean the house. I’ll feed the babies while you nap. Our neighbor is a retired appliance repairman. I’ll get him to come over and fix the washing machine. Don’t cry. In fact, I’ll even call George at the office and tell him to come home early to help out.”
“George?” said Lisabet. “Who is George?”
“George, your husband!” Then after a moment of silence the caller asked, “Is this 223-1374?”
“No,” Lisabet responded, “dis is 223-1375.”
“Oh, I’m sorry,” the woman said. “I guess I have the wrong number.”
There was a short pause, then Lisabet asked, “Does that mean dat you are not coming over?”
Who can we count on when we need help? There are times when we feel like we are surrounded by people who support us and are willing to lend a hand. Other times, for any number of reasons, we feel alone. The Bible assures us, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1 ESV)
Even though God is always with us, there are those frustrating seasons when no matter how hard we try, we just can’t feel His presence. It is for those situations that He tells us, “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10a) He wants us to quit worrying and trust in Him.
Thank You, Gracious Lord, that You are always with us. Many times we get caught in a flurry of activities and emotions that leave us wondering how things will ever work out. Thank You for reminding us to calm down, to be still, and to trust that You truly are God, the Lord of all. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
