Voters to decide two local races in November election

By Lori EhdeThe filing period closed at 5 p.m. Tuesday for candidates interested in running for local public office.In city of Luverne elections, there will be a race for the South Ward seat to be vacated by Bob Kaczrowski. David Hauge had filed for the position, and it appeared he would run unopposed until late on Tuesday, when Luverne’s Jody Reisch threw his hat into the ring.North Ward Alderman Pat Baustian is seeking re-election to his seat on the City Council. He is running unopposed.There are two North Ward seats on the council and two South Ward seats. They’re all four-year terms, but they’re up for election alternately every two years.The north and south wards are divided by a line that starts with Dodge Street on the west edge of town and zigzags down Highway 75 to Brown Street over to Blue Mound Avenue and then south again to Main Street all the way to the east edge of town.Mayor Andy Steensma will run unopposed for another two-year term.The only race voters will have the chance to decide in Rock County is the sheriff. Deputy Evan Verbrugge is challenging incumbent Mike Winkels for that position.County Auditor Gloria Rolfs and County Attorney Don Klosterbuer will seek re-election unopposed, as will County Commissioners Bob Jarchow and Richard Bakken.The other two county seats up for election are the Soil and Water Districts 2 and 5, and incumbents Vicky Smook and Don Reker have filed for those respective positions.In the Luverne School District, four School Board seats are up for election, and four people have filed unopposed for those seats.New to the School Board will be Carol Morgan, who filed for the seat vacated by Cary Radisewitz. The other three incumbents who filed are Bill Stegemann, Dan Kopp, and Becky Walgrave. The Star Herald will provide continuing coverage of the sheriff and council races, in addition to information about state and federal offices.
