As it stands right now, the winter sports season for the Minnesota State High School League is scheduled to begin on Dec. 21. The first contests are scheduled to take place on Jan. 4.
If and when the winter sports season starts, it should be an exciting one in Rock County.
The Luverne girls’ hockey team is coming off a state tournament berth and finished the regular season with a 20-4 record.
The Cardinals will return four of the top five goal scorers from last year’s state tournament team.
Kamryn Van Batavia led the Cardinals with 42 goals as a freshman.
Reghan Bork finished with 17 goals. Rylee Gee had 14 goals and Roz Oye 10.
The Cardinal boys will return four seniors from a team that finished the regular season with a 15-10 record. They opened the section tournament with a 4-3 victory over Marshall but fell to Hutchinson 6-1 in the second round.
The Luverne girls’ basketball team reached the section championship game for the first time in 40 years last season.
The title game against Windom ended with the Eagles defeating the Cardinals 54-52 on a buzzer-beater.
The Cardinals return a strong group of players from last year’s No. 1 seed and could be in store for another postseason run in 2021.
On the boys’ side of things, the Cardinals finished the basketball season with an 11-13 record.
They return a number of key contributors from last season's team, and they’ll look to get over the .500 mark in 2021.
The Luverne wrestling team returns one member that earned Big South All-Conference honors last season. Riley Cowell led the Cardinals in total wins last season and will look to build off that success as a senior.
The Hills-Beaver Creek girls’ basketball squad is coming off a season in which they claimed the Red Rock Conference title.
The Patriots return three players that earned all-conference honors last season. They are seniors Taryn Rauk and Abby Knobloch and junior Kenadie Fick.
The Patriot boys finished the 2019-2020 season with an 8-15 record and will return a pair of varsity letter winners from last season's team. Cousins Zander and Gavin Wysong will look to lead the Patriots over the .500 mark in 2021.
I’m looking forward to hopefully bringing you winter sports coverage in 2021. What that season will look like is a mystery to everybody.
Hopefully it’s one that can start and finish with no interruptions.
