The Luverne Cardinals found themselves down 2-0 in their match against the Pipestone Area Arrows on Thursday, Nov. 5, in Pipestone.
The Cardinals were staring at another 3-0 loss, but were able to come back to win the match 3-2.
“We allowed longer service runs by Pipestone during the first two sets,” Luverne head coach Sarah DeBeer said.
“We made some adjustments and recognized our faults for the last three sets. Our blocking and hitting game really took over in the last three games.”
Pipestone opened the match by winning the first set 25-21. The Arrows won a back-and-forth second set, 25-22.
The Cardinals started their comeback by winning a competitive third set, 25-23. The fourth was another tight contest with Luverne coming out on top 25-22.
Luverne completed the comeback by defeating the Arrows 15-11. The Cardinals were able to come back from a 2-0 deficit because they started to believe in one another.
“Our trust in each other really showed throughout the game,” DeBeer said. “Adjusting our defense based on Pipestone’s hitters, we hit the ball to challenge their defense. We recognized that this is not an individual battle. It’s a whole team effort.”
DeBeer said her team did a great job from the service line and kept the pressure on Pipestone’s defense.
“Our entire team did a good job from the serving line. Our serving percentage was 97 percent. We served the ball aggressively and effectively.”
Trista Baustian and Reghan Bork both recorded 17 assists. Baustian added one ace.
Gracie Zewiske recorded 12 kills and five solo blocks. Kamryn VanBatavia recorded nine kills.
Elise Ferrell led the team with 21 digs. Macy Stratton recorded 18 digs. Stratton recorded one ace from the service line.
With the win, the Cardinals are now 2-5 overall.
