For a lot of prep athletes they have two goals in mind: to reach the state tournament in their respective sports and to be able to play that sport at the collegiate level.
Luverne’s Regan Feit has accomplished that first goal plenty of times during her time as a Luverne Cardinal.
Since becoming a member of the cross country team in seventh grade, Feit has competed at the state tournament each year, with the exception of this season due to Covid-19.
Feit has also accomplished that feat during the spring as a member of the track and field team for the Cardinals. Since seventh grade Feit has reached the state tournament every year.
On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Feit accomplished that second goal when she signed her letter of intent to become a member of Winona State University’s track and field team.
“It feels good to able to continue to compete in a sport that I love,” Feit said. “I chose Winona because I really liked the coach. He has been there for a long time and I’m looking forward to learning from him.”
For the Feits, running is a family affair. Regan said that she got into cross country and track from an early age because of her mother.
“My mom (Amy Feit) competed in running events and I remember always going and watching her,” Regan said. “It’s just something that I fell in love with.”
People who are runners know that the running community is a very supportive group, always encouraging one another. That positive environment that surrounds track and field is something Feit said she loves about the sport.
“When you’re running, you’re technically running by yourself,” Feit said. “But you have your teammates cheering you on.”
Feit also said she enjoys the different competitive events that track and field offers to athletes.
“I like being able to compete in multiple events at one meet,” Feit said. “During most meets I would run the 4-by-800, 300 meter hurdles, the 4-by-400 and the pole vault. I’d compete in those events all in the same day.”
With track and field, Feit can display her quickness in one event and then her endurance in another event.
“It’s nice being able to show my abilities in multiple areas,” Feit said. “Not having to run the same distances every meet is nice.”
Feit is a three-sport athlete for the Cardinals, with hockey filling her time in the winter season.
This spring will be her final season competing for the Luverne track and field team, and Feit said she’s excited for one more go-around with her teammates.
“I’ll miss my teammates the most,” Feit said. “Luckily I get one more season with them this spring.”
