Redbirds split at Belle Plaine tournament

The Luverne Redbirds traveled to Belle Plaine to compete in the Tigertown Classic Saturday and Sunday.
Luverne went 1-1 in the tournament and stands at 7-3 on the season.
The Redbirds host Fairmont Sunday at 2 p.m. at Redbird Field.

Codie Zeutenhorst pitched all eight innings for Luverne in the opening game of the Belle Plaine tournament Saturday.
Andrew Verhey was two for two at the plate and scored three runs for the Redbirds.
Logan Norman and Connor Hoffman also had two hits in the contest.
The game went into extra innings when the score was tied 4-4 at the end of seven innings.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Connor Crabtree’s single scored Mike Wenninger for the game-winning run.

Blue Earth 7, Luverne 1
The Blue Earth Pirates scored six runs in the first inning against the Luverne Redbirds Sunday in the second game of the Belle Plaine tournament.
Luverne allowed only one more run the remainder of the game, but the early lead was too much for the Redbirds to overcome.
Crabtree started the game on the pitcher’s mound for Luverne and was replaced by Hoffman in the first inning.
Hoffman pitched the remainder of the game giving up his only run in the second inning.
At the plate Verhey had three hits on four appearances. Phil Paquette and Norman had two hits apiece for Luverne.
Norman scored Luverne’s only run on a hit by Paquette.
