Redbirds beat two tough teams

The Luverne Redbirds collected two wins over the past week, beating Jackson at home 10-2 on May 17 and holding back Gopher League Milroy Irish with a 4-1 win on the road May 21.
Luverne will take on the Pipestone A’s on the road Wednesday, May 24, and will host Ruthton Wednesday, May 31.
 
Redbirds 10, Jackson 2
The Redbirds clipped the Jackson Bulls 10-2 May 17 at Redbird Field.
The Redbirds and the Bulls started off the game scoreless in the first three innings and traded runs in the fourth.
Luverne added one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead.
In the seventh inning the Birds took flight, scoring five runs. Casey Sehr and Nick  Smith both scored on wild patches, Phil Paquette crossed home on a Serie single, Skyler Wenninger  scored on a Cade Wenninger fly ball to center, and Serie scored on a Derek Lundgren single.
The Redbirds added two more runs in the eighth inning to cap off a 10-2 victory.
Ben Serie led the Redbirds with three runs on three hits, covering a total of four bases.
Serie started on the mound for the Redbirds, surrendering one run on three hits, striking out eight over six innings.
Jake Haugen came in to relieve Serie in the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit, striking out three batters.

In the third inning, Smith finally scored for Luverne on a Paquette single, closing the inning with the Redbirds up 1-0.
In the fourth inning, the Birds added three runs to go up 4-1 over the Irish.
Sehr tripled on a line drive to center scoring S Wenninger and C Wenninger.
Beyer singled to right bringing in Sehr from third base.
Sehr led the Luverne offense with three hits and three RBIs while scoring one run.
Smith took the mound for the Redbirds, allowing seven hits and one run over seven innings, striking out 14 batters.
Fowler came in as the reliever, pitching two innings, allowing three hits and no runs, and striking out two batters.
