Patriots defeat MCC 3-1 in a tightly contested match

The Hills-Beaver Creek girls’ volleyball team won a highly competitive match against the Murray County Central Rebels 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
With the win, the Patriots improved to 3-2 on the season.
The Patriots dropped the first set of the match 25-23. H-BC bounced back to win the next three sets to win the match 3-1.
“We probably played our worst match of the season the night before against Westbrook-Walnut Grove,” said H-BC head coach Dylan Gehrke. “Everything was just kind of a mess.”
It was a different story with the Rebels.
“We preached to the girls before MCC that it was going to be a battle. We told them to trust one another. When you are passing, you have to trust that the setter is going to get to it,” Gehrke said.
“We told the setters that you have to trust when you set it that the hitters are going to hit it. You can’t be perfect all the time, and you have to trust that your teammates are going to get the job done.”
The Patriots won the second set 25-20. H-BC then won the third set 25-22. The Patriots finished the match by winning the fourth set 25-21.
“We battled in that first set,” Gehrke said. “Those last three sets our setters were doing things that we haven’t done all year. They were setting the backset and mixing up the times a little bit. That kind of threw the defense off a little bit. Our setters are starting to trust in the hitters a little more. That led to us having 36 kills in the match.”
Abby Knobloch led the way for the Patriots with 16 kills. Knobloch also recorded one ace and three digs.
“She’s an awesome player,” Gehrke said. “She’s well rounded. That was her best performance of the year thus far. Hopefully she can keep that up moving forward.”
Taryn Rauk recorded eight kills and two aces. Avery Vis recorded five kills. Annie Bos recorded 18 assists.
The Patriots will play host to MCC on Thursday, Oct. 29.
“It’s going to be a battle,” Gehrke said. “They’re going to be ready to go. They’ll be looking for a little revenge. They have a good squad. It’s going to be a battle and I think we’ll be ready for the challenge.”
