The Luverne Cardinals girls’ tennis team entered Thursday’s dual against St. James with a 7-1 record. The lone loss they suffered this season was against St. James.
St. James got the best of the Cardinals again on Thursday, Sept. 24, in Luverne. The Cardinals fell to St. James, 4-3.
“It was a good match,” Luverne head coach, Jon Beers said. “Not the outcome I had hoped for, but it was a very good and close dual. I was happy with all the girls. There was not one match that was not exciting to watch.”
Ainslie Robinson picked up the win in singles action. She won the first set 6-3 and took the second set 6-4.
Mia Wenzel won her match in straight sets. Wenzel won a back-and-forth first set 7-6. She then took the second set 6-4.
Roz Oye and Elise Jarchow both lost their matches. However, Beers said despite the loss it may have been the best tennis they played all season.
“Even though they didn’t win, I thought it was some of the best tennis they’ve played all year,” Beers said.
In doubles action, Brynn Thier and Liz Kelm won their match in straight sets. The duo won the first set in convincing fashion, 6-1. They then took the second set 6-4.
With the loss the Cardinals are now 7-2 on the season. Beers hopes his team gets another chance to play St. James this season.
“We played good,” Beers said. “Hopefully we will get to play them one more time this year in sections.”
