Luverne takes pair of duals against Pipestone Area

By Brennen Rupp
The Luverne tennis team was running on all cylinders Thursday, Aug. 27, in Pipestone. The Cardinals won every match to defeat the Arrows 7-0.
In doubles action, Solveig Tofteland and Lauren Ver Steeg dropped their first set 6-0. The duo didn’t let the early setback get them down, as they bounced back to win the next two sets (6-3, 6-4) to win the match.
“It would have been very easy for them to give up, but they came back to win the next two sets to win their match,” Luverne coach Jon Beers said.
It was the same story for Olivia Wieneke and Jacey Smith. They dropped their first set 6-4, but rallied back to win the next two sets (6-3, 6-4) to take the match.
Brynn Thier and Liz Kelm put together a stellar performance, winning the first set of their match 6-0. They followed that up with another 6-0 win in the second set to take the match.
“They had a very dominant win,” Beers said.
In singles play, the Cardinals didn’t lose a single set.
“All the single players won their matches,” Beers said. “They didn’t lose a single set in any of their matches.”
The same teams squared off in a dual on Aug. 31 in Luverne. The Cardianls once again came out on top 6-1. With the win they improved to 3-0 on the young season.
Ainslie Robinson dropped the first set of her match 6-2. She bounced back to win the next two sets (6-3, 6-4) to win the match.
It was the same story for Mia Wenzel. Wenzel lost the first set of her match 6-1, but came back to win the next two sets (6-3, 6-2) to come out on the winning end.
“They were good matches from Ainslie and Mia,” Coach Beers said. “Both lost their first sets but came back to win the next two sets to win their respective matches.”
In two duals against Pipestone, the Cardinals have only dropped one match, and Beers said he was pleased with his Luverne team.
“I think the girls did great,” he said. “I feel it would be very hard to play a team twice in such a short time. We were able to play aggressive and come out on top.”
The tennis team will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Worthington. The Cardinals defeated the Trojans earlier this season 6-1.
