Luverne Sr. Legion Post 123 finishes year with 9-3 record

The Luverne Sr. Legion Post 123 baseball team traveled to Veteran’s Park in St. James for the 2023 American Legion Division II Southwest Sub-State Tournament this past week.
The Cardinals won their first game against Wells 7-0 July 13 but lost the next two games, 1-0 to Sleepy Eye July 14 and 7-2 to St. James on July 15.
The Sr. Legion team closed the season with a record of 9-3.
 
Luverne 7, Wells 0
Luverne won its first-round sub-state game 7-0 against Wells Thursday, July 13.
 The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Luverne posted five runs.
Alex Schlosser got the ball rolling with a single to center field, driving in Carter Sehr and Elliot Domagala.
Landon Ahrendt sent a line drive into center field to score Schlosser from second base.
Conner Connell doubled, scoring Blake Sauer and Riley Sneller.
In the sixth inning Luverne added two more runs to ensure a first-round win.
Sneller sent a single to right field scoring Kaden Anderson, and Connell flew out to left field and Sneller scored on the throw home.
Anderson took the mound and pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing zero runs on three hits and striking out nine batters.
Josh Hansen came in to relieve Anderson, pitching two-thirds of an inning, with no runs scored on zero hits.

In the second game Luverne lost a close 1-0 contest to Sleepy Eye Friday, July 14.
Luverne fell behind Sleepy Eye 1-0 in the first inning and couldn’t find a way to cross the plate the rest of the game.
Sleepy Eye’s one run came on a pop-up to left field, and an error resulted in a runner on third base scoring.
Luverne had three total errors in the game to Sleepy Eye’s one.
Serie, Braydon Ripka, Connell and Ahrendt each collected one hit in the game and turned one double play.
Zach DeBoer pitched a full game, going six innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out two batters.

St. James 7, Luverne 2
In the final game for the 2023 season, Luverne lost to St. James 7-2 on Saturday, July 15.
A triple by Connell put Luverne on the board in the first inning, scoring Sneller from first base.
In the top of the fifth inning Sehr helped to tie the game 2-2 with a single to left field, driving in Connell from second.
In the bottom of the fifth Luverne gave up one more run and in the sixth inning saw Sleppy Eye score four more runs to win the game 7-2.
Connell was able to pound the ball, posting one double and a triple while covering six total bases in the game.
Stroh took the mound pitching five innings, allowing three runs on ten hits and striking out four batters.
Jayden Johnson pitched a third inning in the sixth, allowing three runs on one hit, and Josh Hansen went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on one hit.
