Luverne Redbirds open season with loss to Milroy Irish at home

The Luverne Redbirds amateur baseball team opened the 2022 season with a loss to the Milroy Irish at home Sunday. 
“It was a tough way to start the year, but there is a lot of baseball left,” said Redbirds manager Brooks Maurer.
Milroy jumped to an early lead by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. 
Luverne scored its first run of the season in the bottom of the second inning when Newt Johnson scored on an RBI single by Ethan Beyer. 
In the fourth inning, the Redbirds added a second run when Cade Wenninger scored on a sacrifice fly by Beyer to cut the Irish lead to 4-2. 
Milroy then went on to score one run in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and four more in the eighth to secure the road victory. 
Beyer led the Redbird offense with two hits and two RBIs. 
Gaige Nath, Skyler Wenninger, Ben Serie, Cade Wenninger, Jake Haugen and Colby Crabtree had one hit each in the game for Luverne. 
Nath hit a triple and Haugen had a double. 
Haugen was the losing pitcher for the Redbirds. He pitched seven innings, striking out ten and giving up one walk, eleven hits and seven runs, three of which were earned. 
Cade Wenninger pitched the final two innings. He struck out three and walked two Irish batters. Wenninger gave up four hits and four earned runs. 
The Redbirds were scheduled to play in Ruthton Wednesday, May 18. 
Luverne will play in Mountain Lake Sunday at 2 p.m.  before hosting the Hadley Buttermakers at Redbird Field Wednesday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m.
