The Luverne Cardinals opened up section tournament play on Monday, Oct. 5, with a victory over Maple River. The Cardinals took care of business, defeating Maple River 6-1.
“It was a great effort from the girls tonight,” Luverne head coach Jon Beers said. “All of the singles girls had dominant wins. The number two and number three doubles played really well tonight.”
Roz Oye defeated her opponent in straight sets. Oye won the first set 6-0 and took the second set 6-2 to pick up the victory.
Elise Jarchow won in convincing fashion. Jarchow won both sets by a score of 6-0.
Mia Wenzel won the first set of her match 6-0. Wenzel then took the second set 6-1 to pick up the win.
The Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw on Tuesday, Sept. 29, against Blue Earth Area. The Cardinals suffered the third loss of the season, falling to Blue Earth Area, 7-0.
“It was a tough day,” Beers said. “We lost three matches in three sets. I was very happy with how the number one singles, number three singles, and the number two doubles competed.”
Oye won the first set of her match, 6-3. She then dropped the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0.
“Roz played her best match of the year,” Beers said. “She played the same girl twice last year and in both matches combined, Roz won two games.”
Ainslie Robinson pushed her opponent to three sets. Robinson won the first set 6-0. She then dropped a hard-fought second set, 7-5. Robinson dropped the third set 6-1.
Olivia Wieneke and Jacey Smith dropped a back and forth three-set match. The duo dropped the first set 6-2. They came back to win the second set 7-6, before dropping the third and final set 6-2.
