Luverne High School girls’ track team takes Class A True Team State meet, boys place fifth overall

The Luverne High School girls’ track and field team placed first and the boys’ team placed fifth in the Minnesota Class A True Team State Meet in Stillwater Saturday, May 20.
Head coach Pete Janiszeski said he was pleased with Saturday’s results. 
“Luverne had the best combined finish of all schools that qualified both boys’ and girls’ teams,” he said.
Luverne had four first-place individual finishers, 41 Top 10 finishers, 20 personal records and six season bests at the meet.
The Hart twins dominated the shotput and discus with Jocelyn first in the shot at 41-01.75 (Jadyn was second with 39-09) and Jadyn first in discus with 123-10 (Jocelyn was second with 120-02).
Jenna DeBates captured first place in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:13.89
Elizabeth Wagner placed first in the high jump event with a leap of five feet.
Sarah Stegenga was second in the long jump at 16-01.5, and the Cardinal girls’ mile relay was second with a time of 4:16.78. Relay runners were Tiana Lais, Stegenga, Reinha John and Elizabeth Wagner
Luverne boys’ top performances came from the second-place-winning 4-by-800-meter relay team of Carsen Tofteland, Dylan Ommen, Sage Viessman, and Owen Janiszeski with a time of 8:44.66.
Lucky Dara was second in the 400 and Camden Janiszeski was second in the 3,200 meters.
“We are extremely proud of the kids for their tremendous effort and performances at the meet,” Janiszeski said.
“Everyone competed hard and did their very best to score points for their team, which is all you ever ask for as a coach.”
Combined scores for girls’ teams are as follows: 
Luverne first with 551, Grand Meadow, Leroy-Ostrander, Kingsland, Southland second with 510, Chatfield third with 473.5, Minnewaska Area fourth with 459.5, West Marshall fifth with 425, Lanesboro-Fillmore Central-Mabel Canton sixth with 415.5, Pierz seventh with 406, Holdingford eighth with 403, Paynesville ninth with 394, Jackson County Central tenth with 379.5, Barnesville 11th with 371.5 and Howard Lake-Waverly 12th with 344.5
Combined scores for boys’ teams are as follows: 
Howard Lake-Waverly first with 561, Sauk Center second with 539, Maple River third with 518.5, St. Charles fourth with 500.5, Luverne fifth with 470.5, GMLOKS sixth with 430.5, L-FC-MC seventh with 421, Montevideo eighth with 392.5, Pierz ninth with 384, Holdingford tenth with 351, Pelican Rapids 11th with 328.5 and Fertile-Beltrami 12th with 238.
Janiszeski relayed a special message to the team before Saturday’s competition. 
“Don’t worry about what the stopwatch says; don’t worry about what the tape measure says; don’t worry about the scores,” he said.
“Just worry about competing the whole time and being your best for that day, and they did just that.”
The LHS track teams are scheduled to travel to Pipestone for Section 3A Sub-Sections Thursday, May 25.
