The Luverne High School girls’ basketball team hosted Pipestone Friday, Dec. 9, defeating the Arrows 59-42.
“I thought the game was anything but pretty,” Luverne coach TJ Newgard said about foul troubles, turnovers and missed opportunities on both sides.
“We had a ton of open looks that we were unable to knock down and missed way too many free throws.”
The Cardinals ended the game with 14 total fouls and made 14 of 33 free throws at the line. Pipestone committed 24 fouls and made four of nine free throws.
Newgard said he was still satisfied with the win.
”Any time you can beat a really good team (undefeated at the time) without playing your best, you have to be happy,” he said.
Scoring leaders for Luverne were senior Elizabeth Wagner with 18 points and eight rebounds and junior Kira John with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Senior Averill Sehr helped out with two rebounds and seven assists.
Coming off the bench in the second half, senior Jocelyn Hart contributed five rebounds and two assists.
“These girls just grind and do whatever they have to do to come out on top,” Newgard said.
Luverne’s game with Jackson County Central Tuesday, Dec. 13, was postponed due to weather.  LHS will host Redwood Valley Friday, Dec. 16.
