Luverne 19U champions of Garretson tournament

The Luverne 19-and-under (19U) baseball team won the Summer Shutdown Legion Baseball Tournament played Friday through Sunday in Garretson, S.D.
The tournament comprised four of the six games the Cardinals played during a busy week in which they went 6-0 over five consecutive days.
Luverne is now 8-3 on the pandemic-abbreviated season. The team is scheduled to host four home games this week.
Adrian comes to Redbird Field July 22 before Harrisburg, South Dakota, comes to town for a double-header tonight (July 23). Luverne hosts Jackson Tuesday.
 
Luverne 6, Tracy 2
Luverne won its first of six consecutive games when the Cardinals defeated Tracy 6-2 Thursday at Redbird Field.
Tracy scored its only two runs in the top of the first inning.  Luverne answered by scoring two more in the second inning and took the lead by adding a third run in the third inning before adding three more runs in the fifth.
Ethan Beyer led the Cardinals at the plate with two hits and one RBI. Nathan Nekali hit a two-RBI double and scored two runs for the victors.
Luverne had a balanced effort on the pitching mound.
Colby Crabtree started the game and pitched two innings. He struck out four batters, walked four and gave up two hits and two runs.
Jacob Van Dam was the winning pitcher for Luverne. He pitched two innings, struck out six Tracy batters, walked one and gave up one hit.
Quinn Buss pitched the final three innings. He struck out seven, offered three walks and gave up one hit.

Luverne 12, Hamlin 0
The Luverne 19U baseball team opened the Garretson Legion Baseball Tournament with a four-inning 12-0 win Friday over Hamlin (Hamlin County, South Dakota).
The Cardinals held Hamlin scoreless while scoring six runs in the second inning, four in the third and two more in the fourth.
With a score of 12-0 after four innings, the tournament’s 10-run rule kicked in and the game ended.
At the plate for Luverne, Ethan Beyer and Cade Wenninger each hit doubles and ended the game with two hits each.
Riley Anderson and Jacob VonTersch each scored two runs for Luverne.
Beyer pitched all four innings for the winners. He struck out eleven Hamlin batters, while only giving up two walks and one hit.

Luverne 22, Tea 6
In the second game of the day on Friday, Luverne exploded for 22 while defeating Tea, South Dakota.
Isaiah Bartels led a very impressive offensive effort for the Cardinals.
Luverne had a 9-5 lead after six innings before exploding for thirteen runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Bartels hit a homerun and a triple as he tallied three hits and scored four runs for Luverne.
Cade Wenninger and Ethan Beyer also added three hits each while Beyer, Wenninger, Colby Crabtree and Riley Anderson also scored three runs for the Cardinals.
In all, Tea pitchers walked or hit by pitch thirteen Luverne batters.
Jacob Van Dam earned the win on the mound. He pitched five innings, struck out four and gave up nine hits and five runs.
Quinn Buss came in to pitch the final two innings. Buss struck out two while walking one and being charged with three hits and one run.

Luverne 4, Garretson 0
Luverne played the tournament hosts in the winners bracket Saturday. The Cardinals defeated Garretson 4-0 to earn a place in the championship game Sunday.
Isaiah Bartels pitched all seven innings to earn the win for Luverne. Bartels struck out ten and offered only two walks and two hits while giving up no runs.
Bailey Cowell, Riley Anderson, Quinn Buss and Ethan Beyer each scored a run for Luverne. Beyer and Bartels each had two RBIs.

Luverne 2, Tea 1
Luverne earned a rematch with Tea in the championship game of the tournament played Sunday at noon.
The game was scoreless at the end of the regulation seven innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Tea scored one run to take the lead and force Luverne to score in the bottom of the eighth to keep their title chances alive.
The Cardinals had the top of the order up to bat to open extra innings.
Ethan Beyer popped out to center field before Bailey Cowell hit a single and made it to second base on an error by Tea at first base.
Colby Crabtree was next to bat and moved Cowell to third base with a fielders’ choice.
Luverne was down to its last out when Isaiah Bartels came to the plate. He hit a single between the shortstop and third baseman that allowed Cowell to score.
On his first pitch, Cade Wenninger then hit a walk-off hit to the fence that scored Bartels from first base and won the game and tournament championship.
Wenninger pitched seven innings for Luverne. He earned nine strikeouts and gave up no walks, no runs and only two hits.
Crabtree came in to pitch the extra inning and earned the win. He struck out three while giving up one walk, one hit and one run.

Luverne 6, Minneota 5
Luverne won its sixth consecutive game over a span of five days when the Cardinals defeated Minneota 6-5 at Redbird Field Monday night.
Luverne had a 6-4 lead entering the seventh and final inning. Minneota scored one run in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough and the game ended 6-5.
Cade Wenninger led the Cardinals at the plate. He had three hits, including a two-RBI double, and scored twice.
Quinn Buss, Jacob Van Dam, Casey Sehr, and Jacob VonTersch each had one hit for Luverne.
Buss started the game on the mound and pitched 2 2/3 innings. Buss had two strikeouts and gave up three walks, three hits and three runs.
Van Dam pitched next and earned the win. He went 1 1/3 innings, striking out two and offering one walk.
Kaden Anderson replaced Van Dam on the mound. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and two runs.
Isaiah Bartels got the save for the Cardinals, pitching the final two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one Minneota batter.
