Luverne 17U wins first two games

The Luverne 17U baseball team won its first two games of the pandemic-delayed season, going 2-1 this week.
The Cardinals defeated Worthington July 9 and Marshall Black Monday. The team lost to Wayzata on Saturday.
Luverne hosts Tracy Thursday (July 16), the first game of a 17U/19U doubleheader at Redbird Field. Minneota comes to Luverne Monday night.

Luverne picked up its first win of the season in a big way by defeating Worthington 17-2 in only five innings on the road July 9.
Luverne offered a balanced effort at the plate with 10 different Cardinals getting hits and 11 total players scoring in the game.
The Cardinals scored at least one run in each of the five innings, scoring three runs in both the second and third innings, six more runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth inning.
Braydon Ripka, AJ Ossefoort and Zach DeBoer scored three runs each for Luverne. Tyson Cowell had two RBIs for the winners.

Wayzata 7, Luverne 1
Luverne traveled to Fairmont Saturday to play Wayzata. The Cardinals lost 7-1 in the seven-inning contest.
Luverne scored its only run of the game in the first inning.
Kaden Anderson reached base on a walk and Casey Sehr followed because of a Wayzata error. A passed ball put the two Luverne runners on second and third base when Connor Overgaard hit a fielders’ choice ground ball to score Anderson.
Overgaard pitched the first three innings for Luverne. AJ Ossefoort threw the final four stanzas.

Marshall Black 7
Luverne defeated Marshall Black 10-7 in a game played at American Legion Field in Marshall Monday.
Braydon Ripka had a standout game for the Cardinals. Ripka pitched the first four innings, striking out seven Marshall batters while giving up four hits and seven runs, with only two of the runs earned.
Ripka led Luverne at the plate as well. He scored three runs off three hits and added two RBIs.
Zach DeBoer also scored three runs for Luverne and Kaden Anderson scored twice.
Luke Bosch pitched the final three innings for Luverne. He struck out two batters and gave up just one hit.
