Change can be difficult. Too much change can be overwhelming.
This past year we’ve all had to deal with some sort of change in our everyday lives, and some of it I’m sure has been downright overwhelming.
The changes I dealt with came in waves. Albeit my changes were much smaller waves compared to the struggles that other people have gone through this year.
It all started when the company I had been working for decided to have everybody work from home due to COVID-19.
The next curveball life threw at me was when my now wife and I had to postpone our wedding on March 28. Luckily we had a never-ending supply of gummy bears, Gardetto’s crisps and cheeseballs to comfort us while we worked from home.
COVID struck again when I was laid off, which prompted a job hunt that led me to my new career at the Star Herald.
John Rittenhouse occupied the sports desk at this paper before I was even born. He was a staple in the community and a familiar face at sporting events.
My guess is he actually watched me play basketball when Ellsworth defeated my alma mater,  Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, in the 2006 section championship and the 2007 section championship.
I will try my best to live up to the standard that he set here.
This is a community that cares about its sports. As somebody that grew up in a small community, I know how important prep sports are to the readers.
With the pandemic it’s an odd time to be covering sports.
Will the game be postponed or not? We’re all in uncharted territory right now.
The dream for any prep athlete is to reach the state tournament in the sport you are playing. For a number of local teams and individuals that was a very realistic goal this fall.

How did I get here?
I attended Minnesota State University, Mankato, and graduated with a degree in communications with a focus on broadcasting and a minor in sociology.
During my time as a Maverick, my friend and I hosted a weekly sports show on the campus website.
During the summer of my final year, I interned at a sports radio station in Green Bay. I honestly had dreams of becoming a radio show host for a sports station. As it turns out, those jobs are hard to come by.
After graduating, I took a job at Capstone Publishing in Mankato as a direct sales associate. During that time I started writing for online websites like Fansided. It’s from there I fell in love with the art of writing.
I accepted my first job as a reporter in Libby, Montana, at the Western News. From there my career as a journalist has included stops in Sterling, Colorado, and Marshall, Minnesota.
I was out of the reporting field for nearly three years before accepting this position.
I’m beyond excited to be back in the field and to be part of such a great community. I look forward to bringing you the action surrounding the Cardinals and the Patriots.
