The Hills-Beaver Creek girls’ basketball team edged out visiting Murray County Central 55-52 Tuesday, Dec. 6, in Hills.
Both teams were equally balanced which led to a close competition and even scoring.
Offensively H-BC made 19 of 57 shots, compared with the Rebels’ 19 of 66. MCC edged the Patriots on 3-pointers, making five of 20 to H-BC’s five of 23.
“I thought that our girls did a great job on the offensive end of being patient and spacing the floor really well,” Patriots’ coach Dylan Gehrke said.
On defense, H-BC had an edge on total rebounds and steals. “Defensively, I thought we did a real nice job,” Gehrke said.
“In the second half we were up eight to 10 points most of the half. MCC started to get some shots to fall and cut the deficit from 10 to four late in the game to make things interesting at the end.”
He said the Deelstra sisters led on both ends of the floor.
Junior Layla Deelstra scored 12 points and contributed six rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Eighth-grader Olivia Deelstra had an impressive double-double with 14 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Sophomore Emma Deelstra scored three points and snared one rebound.
Senior Olivia Bork contributed six points, five rebounds and two assists.

Gehrke said the MCC team presented tough competition for his Patriots.
“Props to MC. They have a lot of experience and a lot of fight in them,” he said.
The Patriots, now 2-2 for the season, are scheduled to travel to Alcester-Hudson Friday, Dec. 16.
H-BC’s game with Adrian on Dec. 9 was postponed when AHS canceled classes due to weather.
