The perfect season that Hills-Beaver Creek put together this fall has not gone unnoticed.
The 7-0 Patriots were named the Associated Press Nine-Man State Champions, and now they have another prestigious award for their trophy case.
On Tuesday, Dec. 15, the Minnesota Vikings released the Vikings All-State Team for 2020, and two H-BC names grace the list.
H-BC’s Rex Metzger was named Coach of the Year, and quarterback Gavin Wysong was one of 32 seniors named to the all-state list.
“What an honor to be named Coach of the Year for the Vikings All-State Team,” Metzger said. “I’m humbled by this award, but it’s really Staff of the Year. It’s a lot of people doing a lot of work. It’s definitely a great honor for our school.
“The kids at H-BC love playing the game of football and it makes things pretty easy as a coach when they commit to all the off-season programs. We had a great group of guys this year and it’s pretty special to see one of your players get chosen to the team.”
Wysong finished the shortened 2020 season with 1,068 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 12.6 yards per carry.
Through the air, Wysong passed for 505 yards and seven touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball he recorded 36 tackles, two tackles for loss and one interception.
The Vikings All-State Team is comprised of senior student athletes from all classes of football in the state. It is selected by the Vikings in conjunction with a committee of sportswriters, broadcasters, Vikings staff and the Minnesota Football Coaches Association.
A team has been named each year since 2002.
Coaches are chosen based on their contribution on the football field, but more importantly on the impact they make within their community and for their student athletes.
