H-BC Patriots suffer first loss of season against RRC

The Hills-Beaver Creek girls’ basketball team picked up its sixth win of the season with a convincing 87-45 victory over Murray County Central on Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The Patriots suffered their first setback of the season on Friday, Feb. 12, when they lost a home game to Red Rock Central 60-57.
 
H-BC 87, MCC 45
The Patriots’ offense was firing on all cylinders in Slayton on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Patriots had four players score 18 or more points en route to an 87-45 victory over the Rebels.
The Patriots scored 47 points in the first half and took a 47-30 victory into the locker room.
In the second half, the Patriots outscored the Rebels 40-15 to run away from MCC.
Kenadie Fick scored 20 points to lead the Patriots. The junior guard also grabbed eight rebounds.
Taryn Rauk scored 19 points and recorded six steals.
Abby Knobloch scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Layla Deelstra scored 18 points. The freshman guard recorded eight steals and grabbed five rebounds.
 
RRC 60, H-BC 57
The Patriots looked to be on their way to another double-digit victory on Friday, Feb. 12, when they jumped out to a 7-0 lead over the visiting Falcons.
Rauk and Annie Bos opened the scoring for the Patriots to take a 4-0 lead. A Fick three-pointer gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead.
The Falcons stormed back by going on a 12-4 run to claim a 12-11 lead with 11:30 left in the first half.
A pair of Bos free throws put the Patriots back up 13-12, but the Falcons responded with a 10-2 run to build a 22-15 lead.
A Rauk three-pointer cut the Falcons lead to 31-26.
On the next possession, Rauk scored on a fast-break layup to trim RRC’s lead to 31-28 with less than two minutes to play in the first half.
At the half, the Falcons held a slim 33-30 lead.
Fick opened the second half by knocking down a three-pointer to tie the game at 33-33.
Unfortunately for the Patriots and Fick, that would be the final points the junior guard would score as she left the game with a leg injury.
A Knobloch basket put the Patriots up 39-37.
With the Patriots trailing 49-48, Rauk scored a basket to put H-BC back on top 50-49.
An Allie LaRock basket with 3:26 left to play put the Patriots up 52-51.
That would be the last lead the Patriots would hold as the Falcons closed out the game by outscoring H-BC 9-5 to secure the 60-57 victory.
 Rauk finished the game with 18 points. The senior also recorded nine steals.
Knobloch chipped in with nine points and also grabbed six rebounds.
Bos scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds, and recorded six steals.
Sam Moser scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The Patriots will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 18, when they hit the road to take on Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda.
H-BC will wrap up the week on the road against Adrian/Ellsworth on Saturday, Feb. 20.
