The Luverne Cardinals continued their strong start to the season by defeating Redwood Valley twice in the past week.
On Thursday, Sept. 17, the Cardinals defeated Redwood Valley 7-0.
“The girls played great,” Luverne head coach Jon Beers said. “We won all our matches to pick up the sweep.”
The No. 1 doubles team of Lauren Ver Steeg and Liz Kelm picked up a hard-earned victory in their match. The duo won the first set 6-1.
They then lost a hard-fought second set 7-5. In the third set, the two came out on the winning end by taking the set 10-4.
It was the same story for the No. 3 doubles team of Kristin Rud and Hope Thorson.
The duo won the first set 7-6. They then lost a nail-biting second set 7-5. They bounced back to win the third and final set 10-2.
“I was very happy that both teams were able to win the tie-breakers,” Beers said.
“They had both lost their second sets and with the team match already decided, it would have been easy for them to give up. They were able to win the tie-breaker to help us get the sweep for the day.”
Roz Oye won her singles match in straight sets. Oye won the first set 6-0 and took the second set 6-1.
Ainslie Robinson won her match in straight sets as well. Robinson took the first set 6-1 and won the second set 6-0.
It was a different venue, but same results for the Cardinals on Monday, Sept. 21, in Redwood Falls.
The Cardinals once again defeated Redwood Valley 7-0. This time around, the Cardinals didn’t lose a single set in the dual. With the win Luverne improved to 7-1 on the season.
“The girls once again played great,” Beers said. “It was nice to have all the players back. I think that was the best match we’ve played this year.”
He was referring to Solveig Tofteland who returned to help the No. 1 doubles team win their match 6-3, 6-1.
Jacey Smith returned to the No. 2 doubles team with Olivia Wieneke. The duo won their match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Elise Jarchow continued the strong start to her season by winning her match in straight sets. Jarchow defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-0.
Mia Wenzel picked up the win in her singles match. Wenzel won both sets 6-3.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 24, against St. James in Luverne.
St. James handed the Cardinals their only loss of the season earlier this month 5-2.
“We have St. James this Thursday,” Beers said. “I’m really looking forward to having a full healthy team.”
