Cardinals' tennis team continues winning ways

The Luverne boys’ tennis team upped its season record to 12-1 after defeating St. James Area, Redwood Valley and Vermillion, South Dakota, this week.
The Cardinals, currently ranked the No. 8 team in Minnesota Class A boys’ tennis, remain undefeated in Section 3A and Big South Conference play.
LHS is scheduled to host Pipestone Area today (Thursday) before traveling to Benson and Lac Qui Parle on Saturday, May 14, for key Section 3A meets.
Luverne, the top team in the Big South West division, is then scheduled to travel to St. Peter, the top team in the East division, for the Big South Championship meet on Tuesday.

 Luverne 5, St. James 2
The Luverne Cardinals traveled to St. James Tuesday, May 3, and came home with a key Big South Conference 5-2 victory over the Saints.
Luverne swept the four singles matches, while St. James won two of the three doubles contests.
At No. 1 singles, Luverne’s Pierce Cunningham remained undefeated on the season with a win over Preston Wegner 6- 0, 6-0.
Griffen Jarchow, at No. 2 singles, defeated Andrei Rivera 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Blake Frahm came out on top over Brennan Kern 6-1, 6-2, and Ethan Nath defeated Zech Ciske 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Luverne’s Logan Ommen and Chance Tunnissen defeated Payton Brown and Vince Brown 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1 play.
At No 2 doubles, St. James’ Adam Rodriguez and Devon Olson defeated Kyle Ferguson and Jase Arp 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
Luverne’s Luke Bosch and Levi Thielbar lost to Christian Pineda and Dylan Reid at No. 3 doubles 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
 
Luverne 6, Redwood Valley 1
It was a battle of Cardinals when Redwood Valley traveled to Luverne for a boys’ tennis meet Thursday, May 5.
The host Luverne Cardinals came out on top in the Big South Conference contest 6-1.
Redwood Valley’s only victory came in doubles play. At No. 1 doubles, Andrew Muetzel and Drew Lundeen defeated Tunnissen and Ommen of Luverne 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 2 doubles, Ferguson and Arp bested Marco Ramos and Kanyon Hicks 6-3, 6-1.
Bosch and Parker Carbonneau defeated Melayna Nez and Joe Davila 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
LHS swept all four singles matches.
At No. 1 singles, Cunningham defeated Jacob Zollner 6-1, 6-1.
Jarchow swept Cole Johnson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Frahm bested Yzykiel Rendon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Nath defeated Ben Jorgenson 6-0, 6-0.
 
Luverne 7, Vermillion 0
The host Luverne Cardinals had no trouble defeating a young Vermillion, South Dakota, squad 7-0 Tuesday afternoon.
At No. 1 singles, Cunningham defeated Caiden Mandernach 6-1, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Jarchow was the victor over Lucas Green 6-0, 6-1.
Frahm swept Hayden Fogelman at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Nath swept Mason Freeling 6-0, 6-0.
Ommen and Tunnissen bested Caleb Reins and Theo Wittmuss 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Ferguson and Arp defeated Grant Freeling and Gaul Magana 6-1, 6-0.
Bosch and Spencer Kracht, playing at No. 3 doubles, won 6-1, 6-0 over Logan Tepe and Henry Schutte.
