Cardinal baseball season comes to an end at section tournament

The Luverne High School baseball team ended its 2022 season with a close 3-2 loss to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City Saturday in Marshall.
The Cardinals won two games in the elimination bracket of the Section 3AA tournament before falling to the Falcons to wrap up a 16-8 season.
Luverne defeated Windom Area 6-1 Tuesday, May 31, and Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 3-1 Thursday, June 2.

The Cardinals defeated the Windom Area Eagles 6-1 at Irish Yard in rural Milroy Tuesday night, May 31.
Senior Kaden Anderson pitched a complete game, striking out eleven batters and giving up only three hits, one run and walking none.
Anderson helped his cause at the plate as well.
After Windom scored one run in the first inning and LHS answered with one run in the second stanza, a triple by Anderson in the third inning scored Braydon Ripka, the first of four runs scored by the Cardinals in the inning to open up the game.
A single by Casey Sehr then scored Anderson before singles by Riley Sneller and Will Serie scored Casey Sehr and Sneller.
Sneller had three hits in the game, while Anderson and Casey Sehr had two each. Anderson scored twice in the contest.

Luverne 3, Morris Area 1
Luverne won its second game of the elimination bracket of the Section 3AA tournament Thursday, June 2, when the Cardinals took down Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta 3-1 in Marshall.
It was a pitchers’ duel between Luverne’s Conner Connell and Morris Area’s Brandon Jergenson, who each pitched complete seven-inning games.
Connell gave up only three hits, one run and two walks and struck out 12.
Morris Area scored first when the Tigers plated one run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.
Cardinal Will Serie hit a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning to give LHS a lead it would keep for the remainder of the game.
Connor Overgaard scored Luverne’s third and final run, and his second of the game, on a Morris fielding error in the top of the fourth inning.
Freshman Carter Sehr was two-for-three at the plate for LHS.

ACGC 3, Luverne 2
Luverne took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Saturday in Marshall, but the lead would not hold as ACGC scored three runs in the top of the fifth.
When LHS was unable to get any runners across home plate in the sixth or seventh innings, ACGC came away with the 3-2 victory, and the Cardinals’ season came to an end.
Sneller hit a single in the second inning that scored Overgaard, who scored both of Luverne’s runs.
Serie hit a ground ball to the shortstop in the bottom of the fourth stanza that allowed Overgaard to score his second run.
Sneller led the offense for Luverne with two hits.
Anderson was on the mound for six innings for Luverne. He gave up four hits, three runs, and one walk while striking out four.
Casey Sehr pitched in relief in the seventh inning. Sehr struck out one and gave up no hits or runs.
