Birds earn another shoutout, defeat Cubs 15-0

The Luverne Redbirds amateur baseball team upped its season record to 6-1 with a 15-0 victory in seven innings over the Worthington Cubs in Worthington on Wednesday, June 1.
The shutout victory was the third in a row, and fourth this season, for Luverne.
After an opening game loss to the Milroy Irish on May 15, the Redbirds have won six straight games, outscoring their opponents 86-4 in those six contests.
Luverne was scheduled to play in Windom Wednesday (June 8) before traveling to central Minnesota this weekend for two non-league games.
The Redbirds will play in Atwater Friday night and in Kimball Saturday afternoon.
The team returns to Redbird Field next Wednesday, June 15, to host Lakefield.
Three Luverne pitchers combined to earn the shutout win over the Worthington Cubs.
Jake Haugen pitched the first four innings. He gave up the Cubs’ only three hits, no runs and struck out five.
Ethan Beyer took the mound for the next two innings. Beyer gave up no hits, one walk and struck out four.
Cade Wenninger pitched the final inning.
At the plate, the Birds were led by Phil Paquette.
Paquette was three for five at the plate, scoring three runs and tallying five RBIs.
Ben Serie had two hits, including a homerun in the sixth inning, scored two runs and batted in two more. Beyer also had two hits in the game.
Newt Johnson blasted a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth inning. Johnson scored two runs and had four RBIs.
Derek Lundgren scored three runs and Haugen totaled three RBIs in the victory.
