Luverne's Dalton Schoeneman teamed up with Chris Jelken to post a win at first doubles during Saturday's home tennis match against Fairmont.

Fairmont nips LHS tennis team

The Luverne Cardinal tennis team came up on the short end of a 4-3 decision when it took on Fairmont Saturday morning in Luverne.

Visiting Fairmont went 3-1 in singles and produced a win at second doubles to nip the 10-6 Cardinals by one point.

“It was a really good match with a lot of great tennis,” said LHS coach Greg Antoine.

Luverne’s singles win came from Erik Wohnoutka, who handed Austin Becker a pair of 6-1 setbacks.

Luverne’s Dalton Schoneman and Chris Jelken secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sterlin Johnson and Tony Joseph at first doubles, while Tanner Baustian and Isaac Gillette nailed down 6-0 and 6-2 victories over Jake Kallenbach and Shawn Busche in the third slot.

Fairmont received singles wins from Tyler Head (6-1, 6-3 over Cory Stroeh at No. 2), Carter Klanderud (6-4, 6-1 over Jacob Jarchow at No. 3) and Andy Hagen (7-3, 7-5 over Trey Buastian at No. 4).

Fairmont’s Mitch Anderson and Ryan Busche posted a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) win over Mark Robinson and Cade VerSteeg at second doubles.
