Cards stage stunning comeback against Saints
The Luverne Cardinals snapped a four-game slide in baseball by staging a stunning rally April 28 at Redbird Field.
Trailing 19-12 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, LHS plated eight runs with two outs in the frame to pull out a 20-19 victory.
The rally featured a two-run double by Jaxon Nelson, a two-run single by Cole Bosch and an RBI groundout by Andrew Verhey.
The comeback became complete when Tommy Vajgrt lifted a fly ball to center field with the bases loaded. When the ball caromed off the outfielder’s glove and skipped away from the defender, three runs scored to end the game.
It was the second comeback LHS staged in the game as the Cardinals countered a nine-run outburst by the Saints in the top of the second by scoring nine runs in the bottom of the frame.
Connor Sandbulte, Verhey and Bosch registered two-run singles and Joe Sommers and Zach Suelter singled home one run each to highlight Luverne’s second inning.
St. James proceeded to score 10 runs in the next five innings, while Luverne scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before exploding in the seventh.
Bosch doubled home a run and Sommers recorded a sacrifice fly in the fourth, while Verhey drove in a run with a ground out in the fifth.
Nelson pitched one scoreless inning of relief to earn the win.
Nick Overgaard (12 runs in two and one-third innings) and Vajgrt (seven runs in three and two-thirds innings) and Suelter (one walk) also worked on the mound.
