Patriots, Cardinals shine at Dakota Relays

Luverne and Hills-Beaver Creek High School athletes turned in some top-notch performances during the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls over the weekend.

LHS and H-BC turned in a combined 10 top-10 performances in one of the biggest meets they will compete in this year.

H-BC’s sprint-medley relay turned in a record-setting effort during Class B competition.

Not only did Paige Tilstra, Madison Spath, Sidney Fick and Jenna Wilgenburg win the event with a time of 4:18.74, they shattered a school record that remained in place from 1982 by nearly 10 seconds.

The Patriot girls also placed fourth and ninth in the 1,600- and 800-meter relays with respective 4:19.27 and 1:54.2 times.

Grace Bundesen, Tilstra, Sidney Fick and Wilgenburg formed the 1,600-meter team, while Spath, Tilstra, Tessa Velgersdyk and Wilgenburg teamed up in the 800.

H-BC’s Isaiah Vis, Cooper Vaughn, Carey Taubert and Carson Baker placed fourth in the boys’ sprint-medley relay with a time of 3:50.18.

Competing in Class A, Luverne’s top effort came from the girls’ 800- and 400-meter relays, which placed second and fifth with respective 1:47.6 and 52.01 times.

Sierra Schmuck, Naomi Dooyema, Kynzie Smedsrud and Tayla Peterson formed the 800-meter squad, while Schmuck, Dooyema, Joci Oye and Peterson teamed up in the 400.

Morgan Edwards also had a strong showing by placing sixth in the shot put with a toss of 38-5 ¼.

The LHS boys placed fifth and sixth in the 3,200-meter and sprint medley relays with times of 8:29.27 and 3:43.37.

Payton Stemper, Drew Weis, Ethan Marshall and Jeremiah Dooyema ran the 3,200, while Jackson Winter, Trenton Rops, Weis and Stemper competed in the medley.

Winter also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.44, while Rops placed 10th in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.01.

Here is a look at the rest of the results turned in by H-BC, LHS and Adrian, another Class B entry, during the weekend meet.

 

H-BC

12th place: girls’ 400 relay (Spath, Bundesen, Fick and Velgersdyk), 54.57.

15th place: boys’ 800 relay (Vaughn, Isaiah Wagenaar, Zach Scholten and Taubert), 1:39.51.

21st place: boys’ 400 relay (Vaughn, Drew Forshey, Vis and Taubert), 48.32.

24th place: Taubert, triple jump, 39-9 1/4.

Scholten also competed in the high jump without placing.

 

LHS

12th place: Rops, 110 hurdles, 16.05.

19th place: Logan Stratton, shot, 46-10 3/4; Gabrielle Ferrell, 3,200, 11:35.7.

32nd place: Smedsrud, 300 hurdles, 50.18.

39th place: Jaidyn Elbers, 300 hurdles, 50.67.

51st place: Marshall, 1,600, 4:49.56.

53rd place: Mitchell Muller, 300 hurdles, 45.72.

Matthew Hup and Kami Sawtelle also competed in the pole vault and shot put events without placing.

 

AHS

17th place: boys’ 800 relay (Zach Bierman, Theron Miller, Tanner Kamm and Taylor Recker), 1:37.83.

19th place: boys’ 400 relay (Bierman, Miller, Kamm and Recker), 47.96.

20th place: girls’ 400 relay (Shaina Combs, Brooke Echter, Katie Reisdorfer and Katia Suarez), 55.4.

64th place: Moriah Bullerman, 1,600, 5:44.67.

97th place: Morgan Sauer, 1,600, 6:04.24.
