•Former Luverne mayor Bill Weber is considering a return to public leadership — this time in the State Capitol.
Weber announced his candidacy for Minnesota Senate at a GOP gathering last week in Pipestone.
 
20 years ago (1995)
•Every department in Rock County government has been asked to trim its budget to the very bare essentials in preparation for the 1996 Rock County budget.
Despite honest efforts by the departments to do this, Rock County Auditor Margaret Cook informed commissioners Tuesday that the 1996 budget, as submitted, is still about $103,000 more than last year’s.
 
50 years ago (1965)
•Total enrollment in the Magnolia public school this year is 290, according to Lewis Schetnan, superintendent. School at Magnolia started Monday, and everything is “running smoothly” yesterday, Superintendent Schetnan said.
 
75 years ago (1940)
•Efforts to establish an air training base in Luverne struck a snag this week when Ray R. Frick, secretary of the Civic and Commerce association, was informed that no federal appropriations are available for such projects.
 
100 years ago (1915)
•That the new automobile hearse service for Luverne and surrounding towns will start September 15 is the announcement made by County Commissioner G.A. Hagedorn, who has made this service possible.
The new hearse is a product of the Luverne Automobile Co., and was designed by Manager F.A. Leicher, who has taken great pains to secure something practical as well as elaborate.
