•Two building projects may be in Rock County’s future.
Heartland Express and the Rock County Highway Department both fall short of what they could have for space and working environments.
Heartland Express, the public busing system, received a $400,000 grant from the state with a matching $100,000 from Rock County to build a new office space and bus bay area.
 
25 years ago (1991)
•What will county government look like in 10 years?
Would combining county and city law enforcement staffs save dollars?
The Rock County Board ordered two committees to study those questions and report back in a year.
 
50 years ago (1966)
•Fire of undetermined origin caused an estimated $2,000 in damages to a warehouse at the Paulson Dehydrated Products Company early Tuesday.
Firemen were called to the blaze at 4 a.m. after a motorist reported the metal sided frame building, just south of the mill building, was on fire. …
The warehouse was used to house some equipment, bags, and a quantity of bulk dehydrated alfalfa.
 
75 years ago (1941)
•August was an exceptionally dry month, but even so, few people would have imagined that the amount of water used in the city during that month aggregated 10,776,800 gallons, or more than 3,457 gallons for every man, woman and child in the city. That’s a lot of water, but the records at the city light and water plant, as reported by City Recorder Roy Fitzer, who that amount stated was pumped into the city water mains during the month, and, having pumped in must have been used.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•The T.J. McDermott barber shop, operated by Chas. Hall, was entered by burglars Thursday night of last week and a considerable number of razors stolen. Entrance was gained through a rear window.
When the barbers quit work Thursday evening they left their razors lying on the cabinets in front of their respective chairs. The thieves apparently grabbed the razors on the two rear cabinets and then ducked, for not only were the razors on the third cabinet, which is nearest the front of the building, untouched, but several pairs of scissors and clippers in open drawers in the two rear cabinets were not molested. The hurried manner in which the job was performed was no doubt due to the street lap in front of the shop, the light making the operation of the thieves rather dangerous.
