10 years ago (2006)
•Evan Verbrugge won by a nose in Tuesday’s election for Rock County Sheriff.
When all the precinct votes were tallied, Verbrugge had 54.54 percent of the votes and incumbent Mike Winkels had 45.17 percent in the final 2,253-1,866 tally.
•The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has a small list of suspects for an early Friday morning break-in at Sharkee’s, Luverne.
The sports bar and grill owner Dave Halverson said, “Someone with a key basically came in and took $3,000.”
 
25 years ago (1991)
•A record-breaking 8 inches of October snow cramped the style of weekend travelers when Interstate 90 closed Friday afternoon.
•IBP employees had a vacation, thanks to the snow.
Plant manager Dave Blake said despite the blizzard, virtually all 100 IBP employees made it to work Friday morning. But by late that same morning, the plant was closed and employees were sent home.
 
50 years ago (1966)
•A tie vote for the office of clerk of court, and the unseating of incumbent County Commissioner Ray Frick were general topics for post election comment here yesterday.
When all precinct reports had been tabulated, James H. Bagbey and Eleanor Boysen each had 2,226 votes for clerk of court. ... (Recount gave Boysen a two-vote victory.)
Chester Spease was elected fourth district county commissioner ... with 1,153 votes while Frick, who has served on the county board for four terms, received 895 votes.
 
75 years ago (1941)
•The decision to make a special 10-day drive, which will begin Saturday, to gather all available scrap iron in this county was made at a meeting of the Rock County U.S.D.A. Defense board, consisting of R. C. Juhl, J. Kenneth King, L. J. Moeller and G. W. Schurr, and the scrap iron dealers of the county, held Wednesday morning.
•Thanks to plans being made by the Kodiak Kontributions committee here this week, the Rock county men stationed on Kodiak Island, Alaska, will receive Christmas greetings from home. ...
The committee has reserved the armory for Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23, at 1:30, when moving pictures of the soldiers’ families and phonograph records of their vocal greetings will be made, to be sent to the men in time for use at their big Christmas party now being planned.
 
100 years ago (1916)
•By carrying California, New Hampshire and North Dakota, Woodrow Wilson has secured enough electoral votes to bring his total to 276, which is ample to assure his re-election.
Minnesota was still undecided yesterday, but according to the latest reports Charles E. Hughes was leading by 267 votes, with nearly all the returns in.
