10 years ago (2006)
•Luverne juveniles were among five 15- and 16- year-olds arrested in Sioux Falls after stealing five cars from a Sioux Falls repossession lot.
The boys, including some from Sioux Falls, reportedly jumped a fence at Dakota Adjusters and drove away with five vehicles.
They smashed through a locked gate using a pickup truck.
 
25 years ago (1991)
•State budget cuts are causing ripples at Blue Mounds State Park’s swimming beach.
Beginning July 16, the park will not employ the two lifeguards who guard the beach for about 65 hours each week. The park received notice last Friday that state budget cuts required employee layoffs.
Beginning wage for the guards was $7.92 per hour.
 
50 years ago (1966)
•Fourth of July was one of the most quiet in years in Rock county.
Although fireworks have been outlawed in Minnesota for a number of years, there has always been a certain amount of the noisemakers brought in from South Dakota. But this year, judging form the noise (or lack of it) on Sunday and Monday, the old-fashioned way of celebrating the holiday is dwindling to almost nothing.
As a result, no fireworks injuries were reported.
 
75 years ago (1941)
•With big crowds in attendance all day, the first annual Sports and Field Day staged last Sunday by the Rock County Chapter of the Sportsmen’s Club, proved one of the most successful and enjoyable sporting events ever held in this community. More than a thousand people thronged the grounds during the day, many coming from Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska, as well as from numerous places in this state. A great many in attendance participated in the trap and skeet shooting tournaments, mo-skeet and moving target shooting, bait casting, retriever trails and other events offered.

•The value of all real estate in the city of Luverne is $2,035,200, of which $1,366,480 is for structures and improvements thereon, and the value of personal property is $816,137, exclusive of money and credits aggregating $608,182, according to the returns for 1916 made by Assessors S.A.D. Kennedy and S.C. Rea. …
According to the latest assessment there are 222 automobiles in the city as against 149 for the previous year.
