•In May the Star Tribune reported “Foreclosures in Minnesota in the first quarter rose for the fourth straight quarter, reaching the third highest level during the current housing crisis.”
Scam artists are taking advantage of the increase. The number of foreclosure scams continues to rise; from radio ads to online “guarantees,” the deceiving messages are reaching hundreds of Minnesotans.
“The MN Attorney General’s office has filed suits against many modification scam companies,” Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership’s Ali Joens said. “In the state of Minnesota, a company cannot charge a fee in advance for service … there are certified counselors that do this for free.”

•Ever since moving to Luverne as a high school freshman, Heather Berning has accomplished a great deal as a golfer.
Berning was a member of three of the past four varsity girls’ golf teams which represented Luverne High School at the Minnesota State Championships at the St. Cloud Country Club, and she played her way to the individual sub-section championship in Worthington this spring.
Although she has played many good rounds in high school competition, Berning may have saved her best golf for the summer of 1995. The Luverne senior placed second in the Independent Insurance Agent Classic in mid-July and will tee off in the Minnesota Golf Association Junior Amateur Championship in Cambridge Monday.

•Police are currently investigating a burglary which occurred sometime between the hours of 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 a .m. Sunday at Bob’s Standard Service on the corner of Main St. and Highway 75.
Bob Martin, owner-operator of the service station, discovered the theft upon opening his business on Sunday morning. The bay door of the station’s garage was left open. Martin quickly inventoried what had been stolen and figured approximately $250 cash plus another $330 in credit card slips and checks, both personal and travelers, missing. All the items had been kept in a back room at the station.
The building showed no signs of forcible entry. Police figure either a key was used or someone hid inside when the station was closed by Jerry Gieseke of Luverne at 10 p.m. Saturday. Since the burglars used the bay door which Martin discovered in the morning, police place the higher probability in someone hiding within.

•Under the auspices of Dell-Hogan Post No. 123, American Legion, the people of Rock county on next Wednesday, August 11th, will be given opportunity to hear two concerts in Luverne by the nationally famous Million Dollar Band, under the directorship of Harold Bachman.
Sandwiched between the two concerts will be a ball game between the Luverne and Adrian clubs that should be a big entertainment feature, and an appropriate finale to a perfect day is to be provided by a dance at Palace hall, with music by a six-piece orchestra selected from the Million Dollar band personnel.
Director Bachman first came into fame in France through the excellence of the band which he organized among the oversea service men of the United States Army, and since the boys returned home, Mr. Bachman has zealously maintained the high character of his organization, with the result that the band has attained the pinnacle of fame.
