Speech team earns sweepstakes win at Redwood Falls Invitational

The Luverne Speech Team took the first-place sweepstakes trophy at the Redwood Valley Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Twenty-five members of the Luverne team were entered in the tournament, where 254 students competed representing 18 schools.

Derek Krueger (great speeches) and Knute Oldre (discussion) earned first-place recognition.

Other Luverne students receiving individual awards were as follows:

Second place: Hannah Hoogland, extemporaneous reading; Paul Witte III, storytelling; Dylan Thorson, extemporaneous speaking.

Third place: Samantha Ykema, discussion; Gunnar Oldre, humorous interpretation.

Fourth place: Ryleigh Beers, informative speaking; Courtney Wendland, extemporaneous reading; Jonah Louwagie, storytelling.

Blue ribbon winners were Anika Gust, original oratory, and Grace Sweeney, extemporaneous reading.

Blue ribbons represent placing first in any given round and/or being one place out of receiving a medal.

The team’s next competition is Saturday in Pipestone.
