Luverne Meals on Wheels receives grant from Luverne Area Community Foundation

Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota’s Meals on Wheels service in Luverne has been awarded a $7,075 grant from the Luverne Area Community Foundation.

For many years the Luverne Area Community Foundation has offered philanthropic support to the missions of partnering organizations, including Lutheran Social Service’s vision that older adults have access to services that support their wishes to stay independent at home and participate fully in community life.

Grant funds will allow Lutheran Social Service to move forward with plans to purchase new kitchen equipment for the Luverne Senior Dining Center.

A new, commercial-grade, double-door refrigerator and double convection ovens will help LSS Senior Nutrition staff prepare nutritious home-cooked meals for older adults who count on Lutheran Social Service to meet their daily dietary needs.

“Our valuable cooks are very happy to have reliable equipment in our kitchens so that they are better able to provide well-balanced meals to seniors at home, or at our community dining site,” said Rhonda Lorang, assistant director of Senior Nutrition for Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota.

“This generous financial support demonstrates a clear understanding of the importance of our service that enables so many Minnesota seniors to remain healthy and independent in their homes. We are so thankful for the Luverne Area Community Foundation’s recognition of our work.”

For over 40 years LSS Senior Nutrition has helped adults age 60 and older enjoy the benefit of healthy eating.

In 2014 nearly 19,000 older adults statewide were served over a million meals. In addition to home-cooked meals and socialization, Senior Nutrition provides older adults with recreational and volunteer opportunities, and referrals for other needed services.

Today about 50 percent of older adults served through LSS Senior Nutrition locations statewide receive home-delivered meals, compared to 25 percent when the program started in 1973.
