•Feedlots in Rock County are still opening their gates to inspections and waiting for environmental ratings. For the most part, their scores have been favorable, with about 75 percent having no environmental concerns.

•On Jan. 2, 1989, Sioux Valley and McKennan hospitals and the Crippled Children’s Hospital and School will become smoke-free institutions.
As leading health care facilities within the Sioux Falls community, the three hospitals are cooperating to  spearhead this effort in the interest of their patients’ and the public’s health and welfare.
 
50 years ago (1963)
•Some weather, just like we’ve been waiting for, fell here in the form of water last weekend, and has continued to fall off and on since.
Over five inches fell Saturday, and an inch and one-half Friday night and a good soaker again Monday night put this area up to where it has received somewhere around eight inches of rain the past week.
 
75 years ago (1938)
After having seen two rehearsals of  “The All-Star Wedding” to be staged in the school auditorium Friday night, this writer can truthfully pass on to our readers the information that the show will be one of the funniest exhibitions ever seen in Hills. … 
As all of the farmers will be busy threshing, the show will not start until 8:30.
 
100 years ago (1913)
•Nearly everyone in Hills saw the severe hail storm that passed through Valley Springs, Booge and west of Beaver Creek last Saturday evening … As viewed from Hills it resembled a cloud burst more than anything else but a little later in the evening we learned that that section had been visited by a terrific hail storm.
