Wyona Drenth

Wyona Drenth, 87, Ellsworth, died Saturday, April 21, 2018, at Park View Manor Nursing Home in Ellsworth.

A funeral service was Friday, April 27, at Zion Presbyterian Church in Ellsworth. Burial followed at Bethel Reformed Cemetery in rural Little Rock, Iowa.

Wyona Snuttjer was born Oct. 1, 1930, to Rev. Onno and Reka (Huisman) Snuttjer in Lennox, South Dakota. She was raised in Lennox. Ås the daughter of a pastor, Wyona grew up in the church, learning to play the organ. She also played piano and marimba.  She graduated from Platte, South Dakota, High School in 1948. She attended Central College for one year and began teaching country school in Liberal Township near George, Iowa.

On June 15, 1951, she married Edward Drenth. The couple lived and farmed south of Ellsworth nearly all their married lives. Edward died in 2009 but Wyona remained on the farm, active in its management.

Wyona shared her musical ability with Bethel Reformed and Zion Presbyterian churches of Ellsworth and First Presbyterian Church of Luverne. She encouraged the music education of her children and grandchildren. Her family describes Wyona as patient and organized, steeped in the Christian faith, and loving music, nature, sewing, gardening and canning. She also loved word games and educational pursuits.

She is survived by six children, Eileen (Dennis) Sohl of Greeley, Colorado, Steven Drenth of Cypress, California, Rodney Drenth of Ellsworth, Judith Drenth (husband Douglas Anderson) of Burnsville, Lora Drenth (husband, David LaTourelle) of Hager City, Wisconsin, and Mark Drenth of Jackson; four grandchildren, David (Janel) Sohl, Daniel (Mindy) Sohl, Morgan (Patrick Williams) Polley, and Karl Polley; four great-grandchildren, Carter, Elaina, Grant and Finley Sohl; one brother, Norman (Ann) Snuttjer; and many other extended family members. 

Wyona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Drenth; brothers Owen (Peggy) Snuttjer and Paul (Marianne) Snuttjer.

Arrangements were provided by Jurrens Funeral Home of George, Iowa.
