William “Bill” McCormick, 90, Luverne, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at the Sanford Luverne Hospital.
A funeral mass was Tuesday, Aug. 23, at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne. Burial followed at St. Catherine Catholic Cemetery in Luverne.
Bill McCormick was born Feb. 16, 1926, to Daniel and Tressa (Meisenhelder) McCormick in Murray County. He was baptized Feb. 28, 1926, at St. Columba Catholic Church in Iona. His family moved to Rock County in 1932. Bill attended school in Luverne. He confirmed his faith July 8, 1939, at St. Catherine Catholic Church. Prior to graduation he was drafted into the United States Air Force and served in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Bill returned home to Luverne and graduated with the class of 1947. He began his career as a highway engineer with the Rock County Highway Department in 1950.
Bill married Patricia Jones on July 24, 1958, at St. Catherine Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Luverne. Bill retired from his engineering career in 1986 but returned to work a short time later as a surveyor for the county until 1998.
Bill was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Luverne and was a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, which is a subsidiary of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Throughout the years he enjoyed his work with the county and was an avid reader and Civil War historian. For 24 years he and Pat enjoyed annual trips to the wine country of Northern California.
He is survived by his wife, Pat McCormick, Luverne; three sons, Thomas McCormick and Peter (Kara) McCormick, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Matthew (Chris) McCormick, Rapid City, South Dakota; and four grandchildren, Meghan, Courtney, Connor and Shannon McCormick.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas.
