Verna Laura Busch, 91, Loveland, Colorado, formerly of Luverne, died Monday, June 20, 2016, at Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.
A funeral service was Friday, June 24, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial was Saturday, June 25, at Prairie Hill Cemetery in Fulda.
Verna Bartels was born Oct. 15, 1924, to Otto and Martha (Scheel) Bartels on a farm in Pipestone County. She was baptized Nov. 11, 1924. The family lived on different farms in the Trosky area where Verna was raised and attended Trosky Grade School through eighth grade. She was confirmed May 12, 1940, at St. John Lutheran Church in Trosky.
She married Kenneth Busch July 26, 1946, at St. John Lutheran Church in Trosky. They lived in Hardwick. Verna was a homemaker and was also employed as a United States Postal Clerk from 1955 until she retired in 1976. In 1979 the couple moved to Luverne. They lived in Worthington from 1981 to 1986, and in Fulda from 1986 to 2002. The couple then moved back to Luverne. In July 2009, because of their health, they moved to Loveland, Colorado to be closer to family.
Verna was currently a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ft. Collins, Colorado. During her life, she had been a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fulda, and Zion Lutheran Church in Hardwick. While she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, she held various church offices, taught Sunday School, directed the youth choir and belonged to the LWML and Circle. She also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. Verna enjoyed singing, sewing, crocheting, crafts, and traveling, visiting most of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. They also traveled to Europe and on a Caribbean cruise. They enjoyed many winters in Arizona.
Verna is survived by her husband, Kenneth, Loveland; her daughter, Barbara (Gaylord) DeGroot, Andover; her son, David (Kathy) Busch, Loveland; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Elmer (Eunice) Bartels, Luverne; two sisters, Eileen Brockberg, Fairmont, and Rose Marie (Gene) Meyer, Willmar.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a great-granddaughter, Kaylie Dickerson; four sisters, Alvina Brockberg, Luella Seimer, Johanna Busch and Erna Jessen.
