Stanley Duane Stehlik, 86, Jackson, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.
A funeral service was Friday, Feb. 3, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jackson. Burial with military honors was at Riverside Cemetery.
Stanley Stehlik was born to Anton and Steva Stehlik in 1930 in LaMoure, North Dakota. He grew up on his parents’ farm near Monango, North Dakota. He attended country school near Monango and graduated at age 16 from high school in Ellendale, North Dakota. Stan earned an education, business education, and social science degree at the State Normal & Industrial College in Ellendale in 1950.
Stan married Virginia Schultz in December 1951 at her family home in Montevideo. He was employed for a short time as a car and implement salesman in Britton, South Dakota, until moving to Edgeley, North Dakota, where he accepted full-time employment with the North Dakota National Guard. In December 1950 the National Guard was called to active duty for the duration of the Korean War. Stan’s unit, the 164th Infantry Regiment, was sent to Korea in September 1951, and Stan served with the Korean Military Advisory Group. He was discharged from active duty as a master sergeant at Camp Carson, Colorado, in July 1952.
Stan then was employed as a high school teacher for three years in Faulkton, South Dakota, before moving to Jackson in 1955 where he taught business-related classes at the Jackson High School. When the Jackson Vocational-Technical School opened in 1965, Stan taught accounting, income tax, computers, and was also chairman of the Office Education Department. He served on state boards and committees pertaining to education and accounting. Stan also re-enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard, fulfilling 15 years of reservist duty. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW for over 60 years. Stan retired from teaching in June 1985.
In retirement Stan enjoyed woodworking, fishing on the Missouri River in Chamberlain, South Dakota, Canada, and Lake of the Woods, camping with his family and working part time as a computer consultant for Erickson Truck Sales & Salvage.
Stan was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served for many years as the church photographer.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia; four children: Jeff (Lynette) Stehlik, Luverne, Joel (Mary) Stehlik, Parker, Colorado, Lynelle (Rick) Nordquist, Oak Park Heights, and Kim (Dave) Deel, Brandon, South Dakota; four grandsons, Andy Deel, Brandon, Nicholas (Tina) Stehlik, Lisbon, North Dakota, Nathan (Cortney) Stehlik-Freeman, Bremerton, Washington, and Brady Deel, Brandon; step-grandchildren Jamie (Aron, Audrey, Erica) Stencel, Lithia, Florida, Jason Berghorst, Luverne, and Jessica (Jeff, Olivia, Chase) Dansky, Woodbury.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
