Sidney Berghorst

Sidney James Berghorst, 85, Hills, died Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne.

A funeral service was Saturday, Nov. 11, at Steen Reformed Church in Steen. Burial followed at Eastside Cemetery at Steen.

Sidney Berghorst was born July 7, 1932, to Joseph and Minnie (Kroon) Berghorst at Valley Springs, South Dakota. He was raised near Steen and attended school through eighth grade. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 19, 1952,  and served his country honorably in the Korean War. He was discharged on Nov. 4, 1954, and returned home.

He married Anna Mae Tinklenberg on Feb. 25, 1955, at Edgerton. They lived on the family farm near Steen for a year before moving to Bellflower, California. Sid worked at a Battery Plant, U.S. Post Office and Kool Metal Awning Company while living in California. The couple returned to the Steen area and Sid began working as a bulk milk truck driver for Brower Milk Hauling in Leota. Later he worked at Steen Farm Supply and Hills Co-op Farm Service until his retirement. After retirement he worked part time as a seasonal driver for Farmers Elevator Co-op in Lester and Rock Rapids, Iowa.

In July of 2016 Sid and Anna Mae moved to the Tuff Memorial Assisted Living Village.

Sid was a member of the Steen Reformed Church. He enjoyed gardening, canning tomatoes, woodworking, mowing lawn, going for rides in the countryside, camping with family, and loved to play Canasta.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae Berghorst, Hills; five children, Minnie (Melvin) Van Batavia, Steen, Susan (Allen) Nuffer, Hills, David Berghorst, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Betty (Calvin) Saarloos, Luverne, and Anita (Dirk) Burgdorf, Germantown, Maryland; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Henry Berghorst; and a sister, Alberta Fikse.
