Roger Van Roekel

Roger Van Roekel, 81, Rock Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at the Rock Rapids Health Center.

A memorial service was Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Burial was at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Roger Gene Van Roekel was born to Harold and Edna (Michelson) Van Roekel on June 4, 1937, in Luverne.

He graduated from Luverne High School in 1955 and joined the United States Navy and served from 1955 to 1959.

Roger married Ruth Schnell in 1960. He attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, graduating in 1964. He was a teacher in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1964 to 1966 before moving to Rock Rapids. He taught and was a substitute teacher for the Rock Rapids school for 50 years. In 1976, Roger’s first wife passed away unexpectedly.

On Sept. 30, 1976, he married Barbara Lemke.

Roger was involved with the Jaycees, served as president, state vice president and was honored with a lifetime Jaycee Senator status. He helped start and manage the racetrack in Rock Rapids with the Jaycee Club. Over the years, Roger also served as president of the Central Lyon Education Association. He was active in his church as president and treasurer. He was vice president of the mural society in Rock Rapids. His artwork can be found in many private collections throughout the United States.

He is survived by his wife, Barb; family, Lisa (Kris) Davidson and children Errika, Steven, Kody and Tyler Harlee, Rock Rapids; Errika’s children Braxton and Andrew, Rock Rapids; Dave Van Roekel and children Austin and Aidan, Omaha; Dan (Niki) Van Roekel and children Kira and Emily, Brandon, South Dakota; Patti (Mark) Olinyk and family, Plover, Wisconsin; Bob Deeb and family, Minneapolis; Mary (John) Giddings and family, Sioux Falls; Ted Schnell, Parkston, South Dakota; and other extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ruth; daughter, Paula; son, Eric; infant son, Brad; and sister, Jan Deeb.
