Phydelis Ann “Fiddy” Hamann, 81, Luverne, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service was Tuesday, Sept. 3, at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. Burial followed at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
Phydelis Weatherly was born on March 4, 1938, to Robert and Phyllis (Sudenga) Weatherly in Lyon County, Iowa. Phydelis grew up in Rock Rapids, Iowa, and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1956. She attended Sioux Valley Hospital School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and received her Certificate of Medical Technology in 1957.
On June 21, 1958, Phydelis married Melvin Hamann at the First Christian Church in Rock Rapids. They settled on the farm where they remained for the next 40 years. Fiddy worked at the Luverne Community Hospital in Luverne from 1957 to 1959 as a lab and X-ray technician. She then became a full-time housewife and farm wife.
Fiddy was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne and received her confirmation there in 1958. She was active in Circle and LWML Guild. She was a charter member of the Altar Guild. She was the Meals on Wheels coordinator for 15 years and the LWML Women’s Society historian from 2002 to 2009. She was also involved as a 4-H leader.
In her spare time, Fiddy enjoyed gardening, traveling, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Her grandchildren will always treasure the quilts that were gifted to them by their grandmother for their graduations.
Fiddy is survived by her husband, Melvin; four children, Lori of Jacksonville, Florida, David (Lisa) of Luverne, Daniel (Julie) of Luverne and John (Misty) of Hollywood, Florida; 10 grandchildren, Erin (Tim) Schneekloth and their children Kade and Jayse, Andrew, Jordan, Justin, Karissa, Jenae, Kynzie, Kaila (Kellen) Kooi and their children, Kaenen and Kamille, Autumn and Hunter; two step-grandchildren, Jamie (David) Tofteland and their children Brayden, Jace, Carsen and Ahna, and Brandon (Heather) Buysse and their children Addison and Emma; and a sister, Karyn (Clarence) Boer of Rock Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Linda; a niece, Linda Loven; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Donna Weatherly; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marybelle and Henry Timmermans.
